ILP: Meghalaya social groups meet CM for 'aggressive' action

Shillong: The Confederation of Meghalaya Social Organisations (CoMSO) on Thursday met the Meghalaya chief minister Conrad K Sangma to follow up on the issue of Inner Line Permit (ILP) and the Meghalaya Residents Safety and Security Act (MRSSA).

Addressing the media, Secretary of CoMSO Roy Kupar Synrem said that they asked the chief minister about the status of the official resolution passed by the Meghalaya Legislative Assembly in 2019. “The chief minister has informed that from he met the Union Home Minister, who told the state government that they are examining the Resolution. They have not given any answer whether ILP will be implemented or not in Meghalaya,” said Synrem.

Synrem said that hope is not lost as yet because the Union Home Minister has not rejected the Resolution of the state government. They have also apprised the chief minister that they want to see more aggression from the part of the chief minister to follow up on this issue.

CoMSO suggested to the chief minister that the government should have an all-party delegation meet the Union Home Minister on this issue since the Resolution was passed unanimously by the Meghalaya Legislative Assembly.

When asked if the implementation of ILP would be a challenge since Meghalaya is a transit state, Syrem responded, “Rules may be framed in such a way that it will not cause any inconvenience to the people using our state as a transit…ILP may be implemented in such a way that it suits or serves the purpose of protection of the state’s indigenous people.”
