Helmets mandatory in Shillong: Cops collect Rs 54,000 on Day 1

Violators will be booked under Section 194 D of Motor Vehicle (Amendment) Act 2019

Shillong: Two-wheeler drivers in Shillong riding out with companions sans helmets started December by paying a whopping fine of Rs 1000 to the traffic police as the department's mandate for pillion riders came into effect Tuesday.

On Day 1 itself, the Shillong Police fined 54 violators and collected a fine of Rs 54,000.

According to Siddharth Ambedkar, Superintendent of Police (Traffic), many violators were also let go in order to create awareness. "We did not fine every violator on the first day and tried to sensitize people to purchase helmets for the pillion riders," he said.

Pillion riders are at the third-highest risk of dying in a fatal road accident, with the highest risk being to two-wheeler riders and pedestrians.

As per the Motor Vehicles Act of 1989, the fine for not wearing a helmet is Rs 1000 and the rider will be issued a challan for the same amount if his pillion rider is not wearing a helmet.

Applauding those who followed the new rules, the Shillong Traffic Police page posted on Facebook: “Shillong witnessed the discipline of our two-wheeler riders and pillion riders in Day 1, i.e., 1st Dec 2020. In this regard, Shillong Traffic Police would like to appreciate and congratulate each and every two wheeler user for complying with our request.”
