Meghalaya: Citizens organise meeting against proposed 'Barik mall'
Shillong: Observing the Climate & Environment Justice Day, Meghalaya’s Fridays For Future on Saturday organised a public meeting at Barik junction opposing the government’s idea to build a mall at Barik.
With COVID-19 on the rise, organisers ensured that health protocols were carried out and limited the gathering to a few people.
Renowned faces like Agnes Kharshiing, Angela Rangad, Tarun Bhartiya came out to show their support.
EastMojo interacted with Lead coordinator of Fridays For Future, Joel Kyndiah. He informed that their movement has organised this public meeting to express their dissent over the proposed idea of constructing a mall in Barik premises.
“ We don’t really need malls in a way that mimic metropolitan cities because, what they (government) said was that for development in Shillong. But, development in Shillong is not at the risk of destroying the heritage as well as bringing in about certain ramifications which will be detrimental to our environment. So if you want to compare the development of Shillong please compare it with other hill stations and not Delhi or saying we want a Saket mall here,” said Kyndiah.
When asked if they have received any reactions from the government since they have time and again been voicing their opinion on social media platforms, Kyndiah said, “We hope the government has taken heed of what young people are saying. Since as young people we also have a voice and we also have the right to be listened to. At the end of the day it’s public infrastructure which is meant for the citizens. If citizens are not happy with a mall then don’t construct a mall.”
The members were seen holding placards that reads-- 'No To Barik Mall', 'CM Just Strumming a Guitar Doesn’t Show Your Love For Music…Create a Space For It At Barik', 'Enough Of Your Affluenza No to Barik Mall.’
