Shillong: The investigation into the Greenwood Resort wedding fiasco will soon be completed says Superintendent of Police (City) Vivek Syiem.
On June 27, 2020, several people attended a wedding at Greenwood Resort in neighbouring Assam breaking COVID-19 protocols. After much public anger, the government filed an FIR. The incident only came to light after one of the employees of the resort tested positive.
Superintendent Syiem informed on Monday that the investigation into this case is almost complete. The details of the findings are awaited.
East Khasi Hills SP, Sylvester Nongtnger informed that the Investigating Officer (IO) visited the Greenwood Resort at Khanapara and recorded statements of the people who were part of the marriage ceremony.
On September 11, 2020, the 36 accused persons against whom notices U/S 41A CrPC were issued, appeared at the Police Station to give their statement. No arrests have been made in the case. The maximum punishment for all the above offences is imprisonment for a term which may extend to 2 years.
The FIR in the case was filed on July 13, 2020 against 35 people who travelled to Khanapara. A case was registered and investigated vide Sadar Case 159(07)2020 U/S 188/34 IPC R/w Section 8 of Meghalaya Epidemic Diseases Covid-19 Regulation 2020 Fifth Amendment and 51 (b)/52 of Disaster Management Act, 2005.
The group had obtained only 5 passes but used 11 vehicles to travel to Khanapara.
