Meghalaya govt to form stringent laws to stop witchcraft-related killings

Shillong: After a person suspected of witchcraft was murdered in West Khasi Hills District, the government is looking at formulating stringent state laws to deter people who take the law into their own hands.

Meghalaya deputy chief minister Prestone Tynsong said that it is unfortunate that even today we witness such incidents. “We are thinking of coming up with strict measures to deal with this and come up with state laws to stop this kind of crime,” said Tynsong.

Meghalaya has been one of the state’s that still witnesses incidents where people are ostracised and even murdered on suspicion of practising witchcraft. On October 7, an 80-year-old man Moris Marngar resident of Mawliehbah was buried alive by his relatives on suspicion of practising witchcraft. The police arrested 13 more persons involved in the act.
