Every truck transporting coal is not illegal: Meghalaya CM

Meghalaya CM Conrad K Sangma says CBI inquiry will be initiated only when issues raised are genuine and valid

Shillong: Meghalaya chief minister Conrad K Sangma reacted strongly against numerous reports of rampant illegal coal transportation in the state.

He says systems are in place to check such activities in the state and the government will not allow it.

Sangma said, “Any movement that takes place is with paper and with proper documentation. Sometimes I feel any movement that takes place on the highway; people think it is coal movement, and when they see a coal truck, they always think it is illegal. I think that kind of mindset also needs to change. Just because a truck is moving, people jump to the conclusion that it is illegal. We are very clear and have taken strong measures and meetings have been held again and again with the police department with the different Deputy Commissioners, the transport and all other departments to ensure that this kind of movement is not allowed.”

He added that the government will ensure in the future even more strict measures are going to be taken.

“We must be aware that we are in the process of setting up check gates which will have all the different technologies which was mandated by the Supreme Court,” informed Sangma.

When asked to clear things if CBI inquiry would be necessary, Sangma said, “It is very easy for anybody to come up and demand a CBI inquiry. The government has to act responsibly and practically. If there are some concerns and issues that are genuine and valid, then it is necessary. CBI is not an agency that we will call; there has to be a proper systematic way which has to be approached. Therefore if there are any issues, we will look into it.”
