Rs 1 cr released for families of natural disaster victims in Meghalaya

The state government sanctioned advance funds of Rs 50 lakh to East Khasi Hills, Rs 30 lakh to Mawkyrwat and Rs 20 lakh to Nongstoin

Shillong: Revenue and Disaster Management minister Kyrmen Shylla on Friday updated on the ex-gratia payment to the next of kin released by the department to the Deputy Commissioner's of various districts where lives were lost due to natural calamity.

Shylla informed that the department sanctioned advance funds of Rs 50 lakh to East Khasi Hills, Rs 30 lakh to Mawkyrwat and Rs 20 lakh to Nongstoin. The advance fund disbursed are for ex-Gratia payment to the next of kin of the deceased persons and for providing immediate relief to the affected families.

Casaulties were reported in East Khasi Hills District, Shillong, South West Khasi Hills District, Mawkyrwat and West Khasi Hills District, Nongstoin.

Due to heavy rainfall landslides occurred in various places causing severe damage to homes and causing many casualties. Eight people died in landslides, 1 at Madanriting, 1 at Mawlai, 2 at Police Reserve and 4 persons at Lumparing. Detail reports of the damages are yet to be submitted by the DC, Shillong. The detail damage reports are yet to be received from the District Administration for grant of relief assistance.

While in South West Khasi Hills District, Mawkyrwat there was an incident at Wah Tynhiang of Warson Lyngdoh area under Mawkyrwat C&RD Block on the September 22, 2020 where a Jeep was swept away after the water level in a stream swelled up due to the heavy rain. Out of the 8 people in the vehicle, 2 escaped and 6 died.

According to the department, in West Khasi Hills District, Nongstoin, 2 lives were lost and 1 missing when the vehicle they were travelling completely submerged in the flood waters. Besides flash floods, landslides were reported from many areas of West Khasi Hills.

Shylla informed that deputy commissioner's were instructed to assess the damage in their districts and submit a detailed report for relief assistance.
