BJP levels corruption charges on NPP-led district councils of Jaintia and Garo hills

From ghost bridges and footpaths, duplication of projects, a 5 crore film and production of radio jingles at exorbitant rates, the State BJP highlighted several cases. They have demanded a CBI enquiry

Shillong: The Meghalaya BJP alliance partner of the Conrand Sangma lead National Peoples party has levelled serious corruption charges against the NPP-led Executive Committee, alleging misuse of funds from the Special Assistance Grant Scheme.

The state BJP president Ernest Mawrie said that there is a need to highlight corruption going on in the Jaintia Hills Autonomous District Council and the Garo Hills Autonomous District Council.

According to Mawrie the Government of India had allocated funds in Meghalaya under the Special Assistance Grant scheme meant to develop areas in the district, but the executive committee utilised the funds to pay the salaries. He added that the funds in the GHADC was used to make documentary films and radio jingles at exorbitant prices, internal engineers released funds and tenders were allotted without following guidelines.

The party had alleged that on September 29, 2016, the central govt had allotted Rs 1000 crore to all the District Councils of the Northeast region and out of that the Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC) was given Rs 133.12 crore, JHADC 1.71 crore and GHADC 33.57 crores.

It further said that on March 7, 2019, the Central government again released funds out of which KHADC received 34,87,95,000, GHADC received 31.40 crore and JHADC received 11,62,65,000. In March 30 2019, KHADC received 15 crore 30 lakh, GHADC 13 crore 60 lakh, JHADC 5 crore 10 lakh.

Mawrie said that the BJP would never allow corruption to take place and wanted to bring the facts before the people.

The party has now written to the Ministry of Finance demanding a CBI enquiry to punish the guilty.

The BJP documents also highlights ghost bridges and footpaths that were never built. Duplication of several projects. Under communication and education Rs 5 crore shown as spent on a film that has only two episodes. Exorbitant rates were paid to make radio jingles. They have also revealed how high prices were quoted to repair official buildings and guest houses.

The party has further alleged that for the last 28 months salaries of GHADC employees has not been paid.
