The mall will have green space, special areas for children to carryout certain activities among others
Shillong: Meghalaya government is committed to build an inclusive shopping mall in state soon.
Announcing this, state deputy chief minister Prestone Tynsong said that Meghalaya Urban Development Agency (MUDA) isn’t a shopping mall and that a standard mall would include green space and public space. The government aims to provide a space for children to carryout certain activities and also an entertainment place for children.
Tynsong added that the main concept of a shopping mall is not like MUDA but it would be an inclusive shopping mall.
When asked if the government would pursue the idea to build a shopping mall at Barik Point, Tynsong said that final decision will be taken by the Cabinet. A meeting will be held and it will be based on the decision of the Cabinet whether a shopping mall will be built at Barik Point or not.
Tynsong expressed that there is no space for protecting greenery in Shillong city. “If you wanted to make sure that green city is in place then it should be in new Shillong Township. We need to make sure that green is in place, be it govt structure or private, at least some percentage of green space should be in place all along the new Shillong Township,” Tynsong said.
He further questioned if Barik Point can be turned green since it is adjacent to the highway and the state roads. And what was the need of it since Lady Hydari Park is just a stone’s throw away, questioned Tynsong.
Tynsong informed that the park would soon be converted into a fully green park once the zoo is shifted to Umtrew.
