Shillong: The Meghalaya government on Monday identified places to accommodate registered hawkers in the city so that the street vendors can start their activities.

Deputy chief minister Prestone Tynsong said that the agenda concerning identification of a proper place for accommodating the hawkers or vendors in and around Shillong was taken up in the review meeting on Monday.

Tynsong said that the urban affairs department made a detailed presentation and the government is working for a permanent solution to these issues.

“So temporarily they identified few places including Polo parking lot, which is to be converted into a vending zone. These places will accommodate registered vendors who have registered to the appropriate vending committee headed by CEO of Shillong Municipal Board and other vending committee headed by Deputy Commissioner," Tynsong said.

There are around 300 registered vendors who have registered in both the vending committees.

Owing to the coronavirus pandemic, the street vendors in the state were restricted from setting up their stalls. Several vendors had also assembled at Iewduh market, Shillong to oppose the restriction urging the government to find a solution since several of the vendors live hand-to-mouth.
