Shillong: Following Supreme Court’s order upholding University Grants Commission (UGC) to conduct final-year exams by September 30, Meghalaya education minister Lahkmen Rymbui has now urged the students in the state to prepare for the exams.

Still unsure if the state would approach the UGC to extend the deadline of September 30, Rymbui said that they have not yet discussed with the authorities of the North Eastern Hills University (NEHU) concerning the issue. He added that it would be difficult for him to comment on anything unless he knows the viewpoint of NEHU.

Rymbui informed that the Supreme Court has given its verdict upholding UGC's order that conducting exams is mandatory for students to get the degree. The stand of the UGC to conduct exams by the September 30 stays the same.

However, SC has also given opportunity to the state governments that if they feel that exams cannot be held in the current circumstances, they can write to the UGC requesting to postpone the exams.

Concerning the resentment of students’ unions on holding the exams, Rymbui said, “I would like to tell the student committees that they have to prepare for the exams. The exams will take place before September 30 or a later date. Exam is the only way forward or else they cannot get their degree.”

He added that as of now, September 30 stands the last date for completing the exams but once we interact with NEHU authorities and if there is any issue, we will inform in due course of time.
