Seizure of spurious liquor at Nongjri Market in East Jaintia Hills carried out over 7-8 hours; case now taken over by excise dept
Shillong: Acting on a tip-off, a special police team from Shillong accompanied by the East Jaintia Hills police on Wednesday seized more than 7,000 litres of spurious liquor at Nongjri Market in East Jaintia Hills district of Meghalaya.
The seizure of the spurious liquor at the market was carried out for 7 to 8 hours. The case has now been taken over by the excise department.
Speaking to EastMojo, East Jaintia Hills SP Deepak K Palecha said that after receiving information from the Shillong special police team, we immediately sent our team along and we seized more than 7,000 litres of spurious liquor. "The case has now been taken over by the excise department," he said.
“When we saw these liquor bottles, it was expired already, so that person was mixing it with some other content, maybe that contains alcohol, so after mixing it, he was bottling it again and was selling them," Palecha added.
According to the SP, one person has been apprehended and has been handed over to the excise department.
“We have just assisted them whatever seizure was done it was carried out on the spot. It was a huge quantity and the operation carried out for 7 to 8 hours,” added Palecha.
When asked if the person apprehended was a local from East Jaintia Hills district, the SP said that the details have not been revealed as yet in order to avoid any problem.
