Shillong: The Meghalaya government along with Opposition leaders held a review meeting on Thursday pertaining to the COVID-19 situation in the state and its preparedness.

While a detailed presentation was made by the chief secretary on the current COVID status in the state, the presentation highlighted the summary of COVID cases as of July 15 and focused particularly on COVID management strategy.

This was the third review meeting convened by the Speaker of the Meghalaya Legislative Assembly.

Addressing the media Speaker Metbah Lyngdoh said that due to the social distancing norms that had to be carried out, only acfew MLAs were selected to attend the meeting.

“We are happy to look at the efforts of the government and today’s meeting we discussed at length, and seen lot of new ideas, initiative steps taken by the government,” informed the Speaker.

Making an appeal to the residents, Lyngdoh said that since they play a vital role, leaving everything to the government is not possible. “During the start of the lockdown it was a success because of participation of each and every section of the people, right from the Dorbar Shnong, religious leaders, Nokmas to others. It is because of that the state as a whole can record least number of positive cases so far. Would reiterate we need to work together and see that how we really contain this virus,” said Lyngdoh.

The meeting was attended by Meghalaya chief minister Conrad K Sangma, deputy chief minister Prestone Tynsong, home minister Lahkmen Rymbui, health minister AL Hek and power minister James Sangma. From the opposition MLAs who had attended were Zenith Sangma, Ampareen Lyngdoh, Hima Shangpliang and Mayralborn Syiem.

MLA HM Shangpliang also lauded the efforts of the government and said that they were satisfied in how the government was handling the situation.

A few suggestions were made to the government, which are being looked into.

CM Sangma said that a meeting like this reflects to the people that when it comes to important issue like the health of the people and the society that we are all together. The opposition and the ruling we are all elected members and we are responsible to the people and this is the biggest message we want to give to the people.

“Though we are seeing the number of cases going up in the past weeks I think we can safely say that things are not beyond uncontrollable manner. Things are very much in a controlled environment. We have very specific clusters which are showing spike in numbers but they are all very much in control and will not spread,” said Sangma.

Sangma assured the people of the state that the govt will do whatever it takes and will leave no stone unturned to ensure the safety of the people.

“When a case comes up or when a cluster comes up, should the whole state be under lockdown? Should all economic activities be stopped? Most probably not. So we need to find out how we could have micro lockdown strategies. We are trying to work on a situation and we have started a step by involving the rangbah shnongs, the headmens the nokmas, where we are sharing not just the information of the positive cases but of the high risk contacts,” said Sangma.

Sangma also urged upon the MLAs since they can play an important role in sensitising the society about how we should handle the situation.
