Shillong: Weddings which were once celebrated with pomp and show have now become a low-key affair. All weddings have to adhere to the strict protocols, especially low attendance.

Now that the Meghalaya government has banned wedding receptions in East Khasi Hills and Ri-Bhoi districts due to a spike in cases, several people had to withdraw their requests or cancel their wedding reception plans.

East Khasi Hills deputy commissioner Matsiewdor War, who is currently under home quarantine after a relative tested positive for COVID-19, told EastMojo that in her district, 11 wedding receptions were expected to be held in the coming 15 days, but they all stand cancelled.

“Earlier, they had received permission to carry out the wedding reception, but now after the government’s withdrawal, they will have to cancel. We gave them the letter yesterday to cancel,” War told EastMojo.

She added that the letter sent to these people stated that firstly they cannot have a reception anymore, and secondly, the wedding will have to be carried out in places of worship but the number of people has to be reduced to one-third of the size of the place of worship, or 50, whichever is less and lastly they will have to give the administration the list of people attending the wedding.

In Ri-Bhoi district too, deputy Commissioner RM Kurbah informed that people have withdrawn their requests.

“There were two cancellations from Ri-Bhoi District -- one was for July 16, another for July 26. Some other requests have come to solemnise their marriages at places of worship, but no other requests for wedding reception,” Kurbah told EastMojo.
