Shillong: Disappointed with its citizens failing to follow COVID-19 norms and protocols issued by the health department, the Meghalaya government on Thursday decided to impose Rs 500 fine on defaulters.

During a media briefing, Meghalaya chief minister Conrad K Sangma said that it was time for the citizens to act responsibly.

“We have decided to fine people in public places who flaunt the rules given by the government. The norms like social distancing, wearing masks, spitting, and those individuals not following the rules in public places will be fined Rs 500. And if any individual is repeating the offence, the person will be fined Rs 1,000.”

Sangma added that the respective authorities and agencies have been authorised to impose the fine on the violations of protocols and rules adding that the Government will be coming up with a proper notification concerning this matter.

“This government has come up with this regulation to act as a deterrent and not a fine collection process. We have found in many locations people are not following social distance norms and people are not wearing mask” he said.

Disappointed with the incident of Shillong marriage party, Sangma said that it was disappointing to see how people have flouted rules.
