Shillong: Reversing its earlier decision to allow reopening of places of worship in the state from June 14, the Meghalaya government has now said that they will remain closed for the time being.

This decision was taken with the suggestions made by all respective religious groups and leaders within the state of Meghalaya.

Meghalaya deputy chief minister on Tuesday informed that this decision was taken due to the cases of COVID-19 increasing by the day.

Earlier, the government had decided to allow the reopening of places of worship on June 14 and SOPs were also handed out to all religious leaders.

The government on Monday had decided to meet leaders again on Tuesday to look at the finalized SOPs laid by the government.

Later, while speaking with EastMojo, Dr Kamaljeet Singh, secretary of Guru Singh Sabha Gurudwara Committee, said, "After a long discussion, towards the end of the meeting, most of the people were of the view that it is better to put it off for a little while before we open the places of worship. We came to a conclusion that we will wait till June 30 to take a call to open. We were okay with the decision since prevention is better than cure."

The assistant general secretary of Shillong Muslim Union said, "The SOPs was finalised but a major decision was taken today by all religious leaders including the government that seeing the situation now all of us has decided to postpone the June 14 reopening of religious institutions and maybe after a month or so we will again meet and decide."
