Meghalaya rains: Govt assesses damage caused by floods, landslide

Extensive damage to roads reported in Meghalaya, especially in West Garo Hills and West Jaintia Hills districts, amid incessant rainfall across the state

Shillong: After roads were submerged and houses washed away due to incessant rain in Meghalaya, chief minister Conrad K Sangma on Wednesday took stock of the situation.

Sangma stated that analysing the visual reports, the damage caused is very extensive, especially to roads. But the assessment is still being carried out.

“As of now, in terms of the effect of the natural calamity from May 19 to May 26, approximately a population of 1, 787 have been affected and about 524 houses have been damaged in different parts of the state. The number of villages affected is approximately 85,” said Sangma.

Extensive damage to roads was reported, especially in West Garo Hills and West Jaintia Hills districts, apart from other parts of the state.

State disaster management minister Kyrmen Shylla said that one person was killed due to the rain. “Bringson Rani drowned at Ktieh Madan Stream at 6 pm on May 23 and the body was recovered on May 24, at 7:30 am from Madanbitaw Village under Sohiong C&RD Block in the district of East Khasi Hills,” said Shylla.

According to the notification issued by the State Disaster Management Authority (SDMA) on Wednesday, in North Garo Hills, flash floods occurred on May 23 and 24, at various villages under Resubelpara C&RD Block.

In South Garo Hills, cyclonic storm and landslide occurred on May 25 and 27, respectively under Rongara and Gasuapara C&RD Block.

In West Khasi Hills, cyclonic storm occurred on May 26 under Nongstoin C&RD Block. In South West Khasi Hills, cyclonic storm and landslide occurred on May 24 and 25, under Mawkyrwat Block.

In East Jaintia Hills, a landslide occurred on May 26 under Khliehriat C&RD Block. In West Jaintia Hills, cyclonic storm/landslide occurred on Mya 26 at some villages under Laskein, Amlarem and Thadlaskein C&RD Block.

According to SDMA, 309 villages have been affected. And during the last 24 hours, 50 villages have been affected. One person has been injured due to the landslide caused in the state. Up to 88 houses have been partially damaged due to the rain.

Shylla also informed that five relief camps have been opened and the SDRF, state police/fire, and boats are have been deployed.

Meanwhile, Sangma informed that the DCs of respective districts have been advised to take necessary steps to ensure that relief is given to all the affected families. “We have asked the PWD department and the other department to find out about the extent of damage especially to the roads in different parts of the state because of the heavy rainfall that we have all seen in the past few days,” said Sangma.
