Shillong: Eight more persons have been arrested in connection with the Ichamati clash in Meghalaya that took place on February 28 this year. A total of 70 accused have been charge-sheeted under relevant sections of the IPC, among others, in the case so far.
Announcing the development, Assistant Inspector General of Police GK Iangrai on Wednesday said, “The officials of the Crime Investigation Department (CID) of Meghalaya who were conducting the investigation have successfully arrested another eight persons. A total of 70 accused have been charge-sheeted under relevant sections of Indian Penal Code (IPC) and Prevention of Damage to Public Property Act.”
The Ichamati incident in East Khasi Hills district was marked by clashes between two groups on May 28 this year that led to the death of one person -- a Khasi Students' Union member, Lurshai Hynniewta. The KSU had organised a peaceful rally against the controversial Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) and demanding the implementation of the Inner Line Permit (ILP) when a mob attacked the members while dispersing. Hynniewta was severely injured and later succumbed to his injuries.
