Meghalaya: All 7 family members of new COVID-19 case test negative

Meghalaya reported another positive COVID-19 case on Monday; total active cases in state now stand at 11; all 7 family members of new patient test negative

Shillong: All seven family members of the latest COVID-19 positive person have tested negative for the virus. Rapid antibody test was conducted on them on Monday.

“I would like to inform that the 12th patient who has tested positive on April 20 is a close family friend of the family of the index case. I would like to inform that the person is under quarantine,” informed Meghalaya CM, Conrad Sangma in his latest COVID-19 bulletin.

The state will ramp up its sample testing from 90 to 170 a day. This will happen once the GeneXpert machine is operational at NEIGRIHMS Shillong. The machine needs cartridges which are yet to arrive. Once the machine starts Meghalay’s testing capacity will increase by 80 more tests a day, from the existing 90.

The state has collected 933 samples for testing out of which 821 came out negative, results for the rest are awaited. The state has 44,403 PPE kits just short of its requirement of 50,000. It has received 7500 rapid test kids, against a requirement of 20,000.

Under the Chief Minister’s Special Grant, a total of 2,995 people, who are outside the state have been given financial assistance. The funds were transferred directly into their accounts.

Responding to queries raised by citizens on over-pricing of essential goods, Sangma informed that the respective deputy commissioners will take action. Sangma urged the citizens to inform authorities should they come across a business which is overcharging.

Concerning the distribution of vegetables, Sangma said that i-Teams has been activated and a large number of vegetables have been bought from the farmers and distributed to different localities. The government is working on enhancing the capacity of I-Teams.

Meghalaya government will continue to protect the identity of COVID-19 patients. The chief minister said that people must respect their privacy, "At the same time I would like to assure you that the government is acting very fast, the department is acting very fast.
