COVID 19: Meghalaya minister proposes to close schools from Mar 17

Minister Hek proposes that all academic institutions, malls, cinema halls should be closed from Mar 17-31. State Cabinet likely to decide on Monday evening

Shillong: Amid the outbreak of Covid-19 (Corona virus disease), Meghalaya health minister AL Hek on Monday has proposed the state government that all schools and other academic institutions of the state to remain closed from March 17 till 31.

In his proposal, the minister also said that apart from educational institutions, all malls, cinema halls and festivals are to be closed in the state till March 31. However, the examinations of SSLC and HSSLC are to go on as usual.

The State Cabinet which is likely to meet at 4 pm on Monday will take the final decision in this regard.

This was brought up during the Meghalaya Legislative Assembly Budget Session. Hek said that on Sunday an urgent meeting was called upon with the education minister, deputy commissioners, health department senior officials and several other officials of different departments.

Hek mentioned that companies or offices with work from home option may permit employees to do so. And also highlighted the need to adjourn the House or make it shorter to avoid any public gathering.

All non-essential travel outside and into the state are to be postponed or avoided, the minister said.
