Shillong: Amid the uproar over the mob violence that led to the death of a 25-year-old youth in Pashang in Meghalaya’s East Khasi Hills district on Sunday evening, Lambor Malngiang, the local MLA of Madanryting, has condemned the incident and said awareness will be carried out to avoid such incidents in the future.

Visiting the injured on hearing the news of the incident on Monday, Malngiang said that it was a shame that such an act of cowardice was carried out.

“I condemn this cowardice act. It is very unfortunate that we have lost a very precious life and this is not the first instance that such an incident has taken place. As a local representative of this constituency, I strongly condemn that people have taken law into their own hands. I will pressure the police department and I will personally take up the case so that those involved are arrested immediately,” said Malngiang.

When asked what can be done to avoid such an untoward incident, Malngiang said awareness will be carried out to educate the people.

“We have discussed that there should be an immediate awareness programme on incidents of lynching and we don’t want to see such kind of incidents taking place. The state is boiling and people of the same tribe killing each other is definitely not a good message. We don’t want that innocent lives are taken away. I will conduct a joint meeting with the district administration to see that in the near future no such untoward incident takes place,” added Malngiang.

On Sunday, a 25-year-old youth, Macmilan Kharshandi, was allegedly lynched over suspicion of being menshohnoh (practitioners of black magic) at Pashang in Meghalaya’s East Khasi Hills district on Sunday evening. While six youths managed to flee to the nearby jungle to save themselves, the remaining two were left behind and were allegedly thrashed by the mob.

According to reports, the group of nine youths from nearby Madanryting town of East Khasi Hills lost their way while coming back from Syntung on Sunday evening. The youths had gone to Syntung for a picnic and did not know that things would take an ugly turn while returning from the spot.

Of those injured, Teibor Kharbangar was severely bruised on the face with a head injury, while Ricky Dkhar also suffered a head injury. The two were admitted to the Civil Hospital in Shillong.

According to superstitious beliefs, menshohnoh are said to be 'killers' hired by worshippers of U Thlen, a serpent, to kill people in order to feed their blood to the evil spirit for wealth and prosperity.
