Shillong: In an effort to address human trafficking in Garo hills, Meghalaya, Impulse NGO network held a district-level consultation and workshop on February 25-27.

In collaboration with Meghalaya Administrative Training Institute (MATI), the Meghalaya government, supported by Church’s Auxilliary for Social Action, organised several programmes at the DC’s office in Tura.

A one-day district-level consultation on anti-human trafficking with government institutions, CSOs, women leaders, village heads and youth leaders of West Garo Hills, North Garo Hills and East Garo Hills districts was carried out.

A need assessment study was carried out by Impulse NGO Network on initiating Anti- Human Trafficking activities in Garo Hills and felt the need to organise these programmes.

According to the statement issued by Impulse NGO Network, “The methodology used for the research consists of desk-based research, case analysis, and interviews with households in North and East Garo Hills District of Meghalaya. It was realised that awareness about human trafficking is limited. Poverty and unemployment coupled with growing violence against women and children, shortage of health facilities and education, and lack of implementation of government schemes can trigger cases of human trafficking in the absence of intervention programmes by the State and NGOs and how the Impulse Model, could be applied at the district level in strengthening respond to human trafficking with support of Impulse Case Management Centre.”

Impulse NGO Network Chair of Board Hasina Kharbhih, West Garo Hills DC Ram Singh, DIGP (Range) of Sikkim Police Sonam Tenzing Bhutia, assistant director of Mati Ivyreen Warjri and several other officials were also present at the event.
