Shillong: Acting upon a tip-off, the police on Thursday seized 83 coal-laden trucks parked in the middle of a jungle near Werang village in Meghalaya’s West Khasi Hills district.

Speaking with EastMojo, West Khasi Hills SP BJ Laloo informed that it is going to be a big task getting the trucks to the city in order to seize them.

He also said that the number of trucks they were expecting were 14-15 trucks but were taken aback after finding 83 of them parked in the vicinity of the jungle and nearby lanes.

"The drivers fled with the keys, so we're now in a soup how to get these trucks to the city. We will have to call the owners and ask them to bring the keys. The trucks did not have any documents or challans in them," said Laloo.

Laloo added that it is not possible to keep track of the illegal transportation due to the dense forests and numerous roads that connect the state with neighbouring Assam.

"A police team led by E Sungoh incharge of Aradonga outpost conducted a surprise checking and found that 83 coal laden trucks were stranded in the jungle and necessary action is being taken as per law," said Laloo.
