Shillong: Known for its tourism, the state government of Meghalaya is now embarking upon several projects under the Swadesh Darshan initiative of the Central government. In this regard, chief minister Conrad K Sangma on Wednesday visited the Nokrek area which is a bio-reserve and Nokrek National Park which is located within its core area.

In line with this, close to Rs 18 crore would be invested in Nokrek area of Garo Hills for building infrastructure and facilities, the CM announced.

"We strongly feel that the Nokrek bio-reserve is really a USP for the state just like Umiam and Sohra is and we need to develop tourism around those locations,” Sangma said.

He informed that contract and tender work has already been completed and work and implementation should start within a month or two and should be completed within 12 months.

"This is part of two projects -- one is Swadesh Darshan, where we have sanctioned close to Rs 18 crore that would be put in Nokrek area, and another proposal under tribal areas of close to Rs 12-14 crore approximately for development of infrastructure in Nokrek area,” he added.

The chief minister also informed that the government wants to come out with Nokrek resort which would be a carbon-neutral resort -- a first in the region -- where solar and other forms of renewable energy will be used.

He said that it would be fully equipped with wastewater management system and the water used would be through rainwater harvesting, besides eco-friendly materials.
