Shillong: Meghalaya government has sent the ILP gazette notification to Centre for its approval, deputy chief minister Prestone Tynsong told EastMojo. The Meghalaya Assembly had cleared the ILP resolution at a special session held on December 19.

The resolution demanding introduction of Inner Line Permit (ILP) across the state as a safeguard against provisions of the Citizenship (Amendment) Act (CAA) was passed unanimously. All 19 Congress MLAs too had voted for the passage of the resolution.

“We have sent the notification to the Centre. We have also sought afresh meeting with home minister Amit Shah. We have already had a meeting with him and he had assured us that he will meet us again after Christmas. We will be in Delhi early next month under the leadership of chief minister Conrad Sangma,” Tynsong said.

All those areas under ILP and covered by the Sixth schedule are exempted from CAA.

The Centre will have to amend the Bengal Eastern Frontier Regulation, 1873 to add Meghalaya to the list of northeastern states under ILP.

Meghalaya stepped up its demand for ILP following The Centre’s decision to introduce ILP in whole of Manipur.
