What caught everyone’s attention were the empty chairs on the side of the United Democratic Alliance who chose to stay away from the election process
Shillong: Independent member of Meghalaya District Council (MDC), Latiplang Kharkongor, has been elected as the new chief executive member (CEM) of the Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC) on Friday. What caught everyone’s attention were the empty chairs on the side of the United Democratic Alliance who chose to stay away from the election process.
The crucial election of the KHADC went on in spite of the other parties staying away. Evidently, Kharkongor secured 15 votes while UDP MDC Teinwell Dkhar did not receive a single vote. Kharkongor beongs to the new alliance, United Democratic Forum, that was formed on Thursday consisting of Congress, Peoples’ Democratic Front, two rebel NPP MDCs and two independent members.
Speaking to reporters after being elected as new CEM, Kharkongor said, “My first priority would be to work on illegal immigrants in all spheres. We will work collectively and not be selective, will ensure that we look at things on both sides and take collective responsibility.”
He also said that it was confusing as to how the UDP has requested the state government to implement administrator’s rule in KHADC, when they had come to file nominations a day before.
