Shillong: In a joint operation led by the Intelligence Unit of Assam Rifles and Anti-Narcotic Task Force (ANTF) team of the Superintendent of Police of East Khasi Hills District, Yaba tablets weighing 1,915 grams were seized at Umshyrpi bridge in Shillong on Wednesday evening.

The ANTF team received inputs at 9:30 am on Wednesday that a person, Pinak Das, would hand over big a consignment of Yaba tablets in Shillong.

According to a statement, Das kept on changing the delivery point from Upper Shillong to Sohra and again back to Shillong. After a long chase, Das was finally caught around 5.30 pm near Umshyrpi bridge.

A plastic bag containing Yaba tablets was recovered during the interception. Das was on a scooter (bearing registration No. ML05L-9706). The quantity seized in the presence of independent witnesses came out to be 1.915 kg.

“It is to be noted that Pinak Das is merely a sales agent of a big drug lord Bashkembor Nongbet who handed over the seized drugs to Pinak Das on the curve of Shillong Peak, Upper Shillong. Bashkembor Nongbet managed to give slip to the police taking advantage of darkness. He is a business partner in a Mawkyrwat-based import-export company and belongs to Sohryngkham. His house was raided in the middle of the night but his sister didn’t tell the police about his whereabouts. But he will soon be captured. The efforts of the entire district force is appreciated for participating in day-long operation. We are still looking for hideouts of Bashkembor Nongbet,” East Khasi Hills Superintendent of Police Claudia Lyngwa said in a statement on Thursday.

A case has been registered against the accused under Secion 22 (c)/29 of the NDPS Act.
