19 foreign nationals arrested in East Jaintia Hills in past few weeks on charges of illegally entering India from Bangladesh after crossing international border
Shillong: A special team of the Anti Narcotic Task Force (ANTF) of East Jaintia Hills district arrested five persons and recovered a huge quantity of explosives, ganja and heroin from them.
In continuance of its fight against drug trafficking and other such evils, a special operation was conducted by a joint team of ANTF East Jaintia Hills, Khliehriat Police Station, Lumshnong Police Station and Ladrymbai outpost on Wednesday and Thursday and all the commercial vehicles plying through the district from Silchar route were thoroughly checked.
In a statement, released by the East Jaintia Hills district SP said that the operation started around 3 pm on Wednesday, and concluded around 8 am on Thursday. During the operation, several recoveries were made.
A night super bus travelling from Karimganj towards Guwahati was intercepted at Khliehriat and during checking 45 packets of gelatin sticks weighing approximately 112.5 kg, 5,900 detonators packed in boxes and approximately 133 metres of detonating cord (cordtex) were recovered from six bags belonging to two passengers.
Both the passengers have been arrested, and during preliminary interrogation, they revealed that they were taking the explosives to Karbi Anglong district of Assam. The particulars of the arrested persons are not being shared in the interest of investigation.
In another interception, contraband items suspected to be ganja weighing approximately 21 kg were recovered from two bags belonging to Rajendra Ray and Jagdish Ray. The night super bus was travelling from Agartala towards Guwahati. Both the passengers have been arrested, and during preliminary interrogation, they revealed that they purchased ganja from Agartala and were taking it to Bihar for sale.
A recovery of heroin and Nitrazepam tablets was made from Betina Lamare, who was travelling in a commercial taxi from Digorkhal towards Ladrymbai. Contraband items weighing approximately 0.74 grams, suspected to be heroin, and 260 mg of Nitrazepam tablets were recovered from the possession of the person. During the investigation, Lamare mentioned that he had purchased the items from Kalain in Assam for self-use as well as for sale.
Meanwhile, 19 foreign nationals have been arrested in East Jaintia Hills district in last few weeks on charges of illegally entering into India from Bangladesh after crossing the international border.
Moreover, the district police have recovered multiple consignments of narcotic drugs and psychotropic substances in the last few months. These illegal and highly dangerous consignments were being brought to the state of Meghalaya from neighbouring states. All these cases are being investigated in order to unearth the larger design behind such activities.
