Shillong: While the post of Speaker of the Meghalaya Legislative Assembly continues to stay vacant, the Meghalaya Democratic Alliance (MDA) has now decided to form a committee to come up with a name for the post.

Addressing the media after the MDA meet on Tuesday, chief minister Conrad K Sangma said, “As MDA, we will have a unanimous and consensus candidate. Whatever the case may be, we will all come together and put up one candidate, based on that decision of having a consensus candidate this committee has been formed to propose and bring up a name.”

It was after the demise of Donkupar Roy that the seat for the Speaker fell vacant. Sangma added that deputy chief minister Prestone Tynsong will be the convener of the core committee.

Meanwhile, United Democratic Party leader and cabinet minister Metbah Lyngdoh said that a request was made before the MDA to support their candidate which will be proposed by the UDP and RDA for the post of Speaker.

Earlier, speculations were made that there were cracks seen between the alliances over the Speaker’s post. Although the parties have denied such claims, it was seen that the UDP wants to ensure that the Speaker’s post goes to their party.
