Shillong: With drug menace on the rise in the state, the Meghalaya government is planning to take lessons from its counterpart in Mizoram.

A delegation of the Meghalaya State Planning Board (MSPB) on Monday held a meeting with senior police officials, church leaders, youth and women organisations to discuss the issue.

“We will be visiting Mizoram shortly to understand how they have managed to curb the problem of drug menace,” MSPB chairman Lambor Malngiang told reporters. “We would like to adopt some of the measures taken by the Mizoram government to tackle the problem in our state,” he added.

According to Malngiang, the Mizoram government has managed to deal with the problem of drug abuse very effectively, adding that the number of drug users in Mizoram has reduced drastically compared to what it was in the past.

“I am aware that the initiative to come up with the drugs policy had been on since 2012. But I hope that the social welfare department will speed up the exercise to finalise the policy after incorporating the views of the various stake holders,” he said.

He also highlighted the importance to set up rehabilitation centres in the state to help people who are fighting drug addiction. And that the need to carry out a fresh survey on the number of drug users was required, since the last survey was done in 2009.

Earlier, a strict warning had been given to house owners to ensure that verification was done before letting out a house for rent or other purposes. Malngiang once again reiterated that the house owners should ensure that they check before letting out their house, because failing to do so might put them into trouble.

“The house owners would require to provide all the details and the necessary documents of people whom they are giving their house on rent. They have to verify if the people whom they are planning to give on rent has any criminal records registered with the police,” Malngiang said.
