National People’s Party 1st from NE to get ‘national party’ tag

The party led by Meghalaya CM Conrad K Sangma received the status after it polled over 6% of votes, secured at least two seats in the recently held Lok Sabha elections

Shillong: The National People’s Party (NPP), a party led by Meghalaya CM Conrad K Sangma, was declared a national party by the Election Commission of India (ECI) on Friday.

In an order released by the ECI, the NPP received national party status after it polled more than 6% of the total votes and returned obtaining at least two Parliamentary seats in the recently held Lok Sabha elections.

With this milestone, the NPP has become the first from Northeast India to receive a ‘national party’ tag.

Expressing happiness over the success of the party, Sangma. who is also the president of the NPP, said that it is not just an achievement for his party but also for the people of Northeast India.

“It is a very nostalgic moment for all of us,” he added.

The party was founded by Purno A Sangma, the former Meghalaya CM and former Speaker of Lok Sabha, in 2013. Currently, it has its presence in the states of Manipur and Arunachal Pradesh, besides Meghalaya, in Northeast India.
