Guwahati: The long-awaited Kuki Zo Council was officially established on Friday, marking a significant milestone for the Kuki Zo community. Five prominent members were elected to lead the council, which aims to address the pressing needs of the community amid the ongoing ethnic conflict with the Meiteis.

As per an update from the Council, the newly elected leaders include Ch. Ajang Khongsai as Chief of the Governing Council, Haenlianthang Vaiphei as Chairman of the Kuki Zo Council, Thangzamang Zou as Secretary, GS Gangte as Finance Secretary, and Khaikhohauh Gangte as Information Secretary.

The Kuki Zo Council, composed of representatives from various Kuki Zo tribes and Inpis, is designed to provide a unified platform for addressing common political issues and advocating for the collective interests of the community. It will serve as a formal governing body, acting as a forum for dialogue, decision-making, and representation on behalf of the Kuki Zo people. The council aims to promote unity, uphold traditional values, and ensure the well-being and progress of the community.

As the highest decision-making body for the Kuki Zo people, the council comprises all Inpis and tribe presidents as governing council members. An executive committee with two representatives from each Inpi and tribe organisation will assist in guiding and implementing council decisions. This structure ensures that the council holds the sole authority to represent Kuki Zo civil societies effectively.

Representatives from various tribal and community organizations, including the Vaiphei Peoples Council, United Zou Organisation, Gangte Tribe Union, Hmar Inpui, Mizo Peoples Council, Thadou Tribe Council, Any Kuki Tribes Council, Kuki Inpi Manipur, and district-level Kuki Inpis, participated in the meeting to elect the council’s new leaders.
