N Loken Singh

Imphal: Manipur Pradesh Congress Committee Nameirakpam Loken Singh tendered his resignation as party chief on Wednesday.

The latest development comes after Congress interim president Sonia Gandhi on Tuesday sacked party chiefs of the five states, including Manipur, where it was reduced to single digits.

“Taking responsibility of the major defeat of the candidates of Indian National Congress in the last 12th Manipur Legislative Assembly Election, 2022, I do hereby submit my resignation Congress Committee from the presidentship of the Manipur Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC) of the INC on moral ground with immediate effect,” said Loken in his resignation letter addressing to the central party chief.

The five-time former MLA from Nambol constituency in Bishnupur district was defeated by BJP candidate Th Basanta Kumar Singh in the 12th Manipur Legislative Assembly elections.

In 2021, he took charge as MPCC president. Before that, he was the party’s interim president after Govindas Konthoujam quit office to join BJP.
