Imphal: Former Manipur cop Th Brinda, contesting on a Janat Dal (United) ticket in the upcoming Manipur elections, believes the state’s youth are exposed to extreme threats that risk their future.

Speaking exclusively to EastMojo, the JD(U) candidate from Yaiskul constituency said, “We cannot allow these politicians and crooked scoundrels supporting the drug lords and drug cartels to continue to ruin Manipur. So, I had to leave my job and enter politics,” said Brinda, known for her anti-drug campaign in the state.

Brinda also claimed that since the 1980s, many state youths have lost their lives due to the drug menace. Despite working as a law enforcement officer tasked to eradicate drugs in every way possible within Manipur and the country at large, she said it was impossible to execute the work due to certain elements of corrupt politicians backing the drug lords.

“I will strive for the total eradication of drug and poppy cartel in the state. Unless we do this, we are out and doomed. We cannot allow Manipur to be defeated in such a manner,” she said.

Talking about the role of women in the electoral process and their under-representation in public offices, Brinda said there is a high demand for money and power in the electoral process of Manipur. However, women, in general, do not have easy access to high-level contracts or black marketing or black money. That is why fewer women are in the decision making, she said.

“We should clean up the electoral process to welcome more good women and efficient women in the decision making and help them enter politics and run the state,” she said.

Even though JD(U) has not been at the forefront of Manipur politics, Brinda believes the party will be part of the formation of the new government in the state.
