In a shocking incident, a police officer in Imphal East was suspended for allegedly attacking Dr K Soreingam, who works at Imphal’s Jawaharlal Nehru Institute of Medical Sciences. Dr Soreingam was returning home after picking his wife Dr K. Lumthing, who works at the Catholic Medical Center.

Collin Kshethrimayum of CDO unit, Imphal East District allegedly assaulted Dr Soreingam and has been suspended.

“On the way back, we were stop by the two CDO police in Luwangsangbam right in front CM residence which I stop by the side of the road which one of them asked me from where I come from to which I replied that, we are coming from Hospital to which he shouted me again from where. Then he shouted me to come out of vehicle,” wrote the doctor in his letter.

“Then other CDO police comes and shouted “noi Usitrise karigino”. Slapped me twice then he asked me who are you, then I told them that I am Doctor that we are coming from the hospital after operation,” he said, after which the cops demanded to see his ID Card.

Despite showing them his ID proof, they shouted at him and even loaded the AK rifle to threaten him.

“He hit my head with the A.K rifle butt which (sic) I was black out for few minutes,” Soreingam went on to explain. He was then asked to open the boot of his car. This was when he saw the name plate on the officer’s chest that said ‘CK Mangnag’.

The other officer who accompanied him did not have a name plate on, said the doctor. “I strongly condemned and (am) complaining (for authorities) to take the appropriate action at the earliest,” he added.

Less than a day after the incident, The Teachers’ Association of JNIMS condemned the violent assault by releasing an official statement.

“What traumatize (sic) most is that, even after showing his service ID Card, he was hit with the service-rifle butt on his head and also an attempt to (take) his life was made by loading the rifle. This was in addition to other verbal and physical assaults meted out to him,” said General Secretary of the Association.

They made a strong appeal to the government to take appropriate and exemplary action against the ‘erring and barbaric’ security personnel.
