Manipur political activist Leichombam Erendro walked out of jail today following the Supreme Court directive ordering his immediate release.
Erendro had been booked under the draconian NSA for a social media post. He was greeted outside the jail by his parents and his legal counsel. Erendro had been in custody since May 13 for a social media post along with a journalist Kishorechand Wanghemcha.
Earlier today, the Supreme Court directed the release of by 5 pm saying he cannot be kept in jail even for a night. A bench of Justice DY Chandrachud and M R Shah said that his continued detention would violate his fundamental right to life under Article 21 of the Constitution.
On a lighter note, Erendro told media persons that he had a “good time in jail” and spend his time reading and writing. He added that the Supreme Court had given the right decision.
“I believe that in the current political arena, the people of Manipur will take this imprisonment, including mine too, into consideration when they go to the polls next year. The current administration is abusing this Act (NSA). Anybody, any one of us, can be arrested anytime if whatever we are speaking is against their liking,” he added.
Erendro in his post had written, “The cure for Corona is not cow dung and cow urine. The cure is science and common sense. Professor ji RIP.”
The statement was made in the context of the death of the President of the Manipur BJP due to COVID-19, as a criticism of the unscientific position taken and misinformation being spread by several BJP politicians regarding cow urine and cow dung being effective in preventing/treating COVID-19.
