Imphal: The Regional Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS), one of the premier government-run hospitals in Manipur, will temporarily close its outpatient department (OPD) services effective May 20, until further notice.
The decision was taken on Wednesday during a meeting between the clinical heads of departments given the increasing number of COVID-19 cases.
According to RIMS medical superintendent Prof H Priyosakhi Devi, the decision was taken to give more space for the treatment of COVID-19 patients and also because of the curfew imposed by the state government owing to a surge of the fresh case of coronavirus in the state, especially in the Imphal area.
However, emergency services, including emergency surgery, emergency caesarian of Obs and Gynae cases, and emergency radiation oncology cases shall remain to function, it said.
On Wednesday, the state reported the highest COVID-19-related fatality in a day with 23 deaths. Manipur reported 582 fresh cases of COVID-19, which took the total confirmed cases to 41,265, with 6,817 active cases.
