Imphal: The High Court of Manipur on Thursday ruled the election of MLA Okram Henry Singh, who was elected from Wangkhei AC of Imphal East district, as null and void.

A single bench of Justice MV Muralidaran announced the proceedings, citing ‘false affidavit’ submission to the Election Commission by Congress MLA Henry Singh.

With the latest development, Y Erabot Singh will be the new MLA of Wangkhei AC, sources have said. Following the HC ruling, Erabot Singh called upon Manipur Legislative Assembly Speaker Yunmnam Khemchand.

It may be worth mentioning that in September last, chief minister N Biren Singh dropped six cabinet ministers and inducted five new MLAs, including Congress’s Okram Henry Singh. Henry held the portfolios of Social Welfare, Cooperation and MAHUD.

Henry had won from Wangkhei in 2017 on Congress ticket by a margin of 4,336 votes defeating Erabot of the BJP. He switched to the saffron party in 2020.
