Imphal: Manipur youth Songashim Rungsung has bagged the Rubaru Mr India-United Continents title at the recently concluded Rubaru Mr India 2020-2021 pageant held in Goa on Thursday.

Rubaru Mr India is the country’s biggest annual pageant for men.

A resident of Talui village in UKhrul district and belonging to the Tangkhul Naga community, Songashim, 25, will now represent India at the Mr United Continents event which will be held later this year.

An alumnus of St Joseph College in Bengaluru, Songashim said: “I believe in myself and I don’t really care about winning or losing in this competition. But what I cared about is no matter what, I will give my best.”

Reliving the moment when he was crowned among the 34 contestants from across the country, Songashim told EastMojo: “I wasn’t expecting when they announced my name for the Rubaru Mr India-United Continents title. I didn’t see how I shed tears of happiness at that moment. I looked up to heaven and thanked God for the achievement. It was such an amazing and happy moment.”

Songashim Rungsung also won the sub-title for the ‘best national costume’ as he gladly showcased his own Tangkhul Naga traditional attire at the pageant

Besides the title, Songashim also won the sub-title for the ‘best national costume’ as he gladly showcased his own Tangkhul Naga traditional attire at the pageant.

“It is definitely a proud moment because, through his platform, so many people from across the world came to know about our rich Tangkhul tradition,” an elated Songashim said.

However, for Songashim, the journey towards the title wasn’t all that rosy and smooth. He had to encounter many challenges and obstacles along the way which later converted into his own strength and finding inner peace.

According to him, just a week before the grand finale, he met with an accident and dislocated his left shoulder. Being a fitness enthusiast, he had already planned to perform some fitness regime for the talent show competition at the pageant.

“All throughout the pageant journey, I had to carry my hand with the help of a sling. At times, I felt de-motivated for not being able to move my arm freely. I struggled a lot, especially while changing outfits. However, I considered all these struggles as a challenge and accepted that God must be testing my determination and confidence level,” said Songashim.

Currently based in Bengaluru as a freelance model, Songashim started off his journey into the glamour world in 2018 when he first participated at Mega Northeast. He were selected among the top 10 finalists.

After winning the title, he is now looking forward to visiting his hometown and celebrate his achievement with his family and friends in Ukhrul district, whom he considered as his strongest fans.

Back in his hometown, Songashim is also planning to work with youth on substance abuse, something which is dear to his heart.

“The reason why I actually wanted to work with the youth on substance abuse is that recently I lost two of my elder brothers because of the menace. I would like to focus more on this sensitive issue because I’ve been seeing my mom crying every night in the cold bed. I don’t want any mother to go through the same situation again,” he said.

“One of my objectives would be to make all the Tangkhul youths fit and healthy,” he added.

On the work front, besides preparing for the upcoming global pageant, Songashim is also planning to join acting classes for a couple of months for a bigger platform.
