Imphal: In a tragic incident, one person was killed and another severely injured when a speeding vehicle knocked them down on Thursday night.
According to reports, two people were severely injured in the accident, and one of them succumbed to his injuries.
The Police said the incident happened at around 7:30 pm when a speeding Mahindra Bolero struck the two pedestrians near DC Ukhrul quarter in the district headquarters.
The police personnel rushed the injured persons to District Hospital, Ukhrul. However, one of the victims, identified as Shangreihao Chiphang of Lanaitang, Hunphun village, later died of his injuries.
The other injured person, identified as Kh Thoiba Singh, 65, a resident of Singjamei Leikai in Imphal West district, was referred to Imphal due to his critical condition. At present, he is undergoing treatment at Remedy Hospital in Imphal.
The vehicle which fled from the scene was later chased down by the Ukhrul Police and caught at Greenland and the driver was arrested by the Police. He was identified as Chirmingam Kashak, 25, of Zingsui village in Kamjong district.
A case has been registered against the driver under Section 279/304 (A) of rash driving or riding in a public place and 338 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC), informed the police.
