Imphal: In yet another major development in curbing illegal activities, troops of Assam Rifles under the aegis of IGAR (S) seized smuggled timber worth of Rs 2.72 crore in Kamjong district of Manipur, said the official.
As per the statement, based on intelligence inputs, Shangshak Battalion Assam Rifles launched an operation on January 31 and intercepted two trucks near Sorde village in Kamjong district.
The trucks were found carrying 850 cubic feet of Khangra wood and supposed to illegally transport from Khonglo village to Yambam in Yairipok, Imphal, it said.
Two drivers driving the truck were arrested and have been identified as Manoj and Makakmayum Abdul Iqbal of Yairipok.
The seized items along with the drivers and vehicles have been hand over to Phungyar Police Station for further investigation, it added.
To sensitise the prevailing security situation in the border areas, especially the illegal movement of Burmese nationals into the Indian Territory, Assam Rifles organised a monthly village chiefs meeting at Chongjang village in Moreh recently.
The meeting also aimed to maintain peace and harmony among the locals in cohesion with the Assam Rifles.
