Police arrested the culprits from their respective residences

Imphal: In a major development, two persons suspected to be involved in lobbing a hand-grenade bomb at the Raj Bhavan have been arrested on Monday, said the police.

The incident happened on January 19 at around 4:30 pm when some miscreants hurled a bomb at the security forces deployed at Governor Najma Heptulla’s bungalow in Imphal. However, experts diffused it before the bomb exploded.

According to DIG (Zone 1) Themthing Ngashangva, the two arrested suspects are trained bomb experts and have been involved in various bomb explosion and hurling in various places in the past.

According to their confession during the initial interrogation, they lobbed the bomb at Governor’s bungalow under the instruction of one Achouba, a member of the banned outfit United National Liberation Front (UNLF), he said.

“We collected the CCTV footages from around Imphal area and with the help of some intelligence input, we managed to trace down the culprits involved in the bomb-throwing incident,” informed Ngashangva.

Both culprits were arrested from their respective residences. The arrested culprits have been identified as Lisham Iboshana Meitei, 42, aliases Jojo, Kengba, Michael, Red and Konsam Manithoi Singh, 46, said the police.

As per the police, both the culprits have confessed to involvement in various bomb explosions and lobbed incidents, including hand grenade hurled at Lialshing Khongnangkhong in 2019, grenade blast and IED plantation at Yaiskul Police lane in 2019 and hurling of bomb at security forces at AG Gate in 2020 among others.

Ahead of the 72nd Republic Day celebration, police are out on the streets in Imphal for searching and tracing any illegal activities being targeting during the event, said Ngashangva.
