Watch: This 11-year-old Manipuri girl will amaze you with her acrobatics
Kamjong: Mathingwon Awungshi, an 11-year-old resident of Ningthi village in Manipur’s Kamjong district, has been passionate about acrobatics since she was eight years old. She got noticed after a video of her performance at the village social night on Christmas went viral on the Internet.
On Friday, team EastMojo travelled to her village, over 150 km from Imphal city, to learn more about her skills, flexibility, agility and stamina.
Born to Ngasammi Awungshi and Yireila Awungshi, both farmers, Mathingwon is the fourth child among their six. But, unlike her other siblings who wish to become bureaucrats in future, this young girl aims to pursue a career in acrobatics.
“I want to pursue my career in this kind of sports. But my family won’t be able to support me due to our financial situation. I hope I receive support from others,” said Mathingwon.
As a little girl, Mathingwon loved to climb the Mango tree in their courtyard and engage in a tumbling movement. This worried her parents initially, who did not know what to think of her restlessness and 'strange' movements.
"It took us a while to understand this flexibility is her gift and talent. But we are poor farmers, and in no condition to send her to an academy that can help fulfil her dreams," Mathingwon mother, Yireila, said.
Her family hopes the young girl gets some assistance, guidance or help from either the authorities or other like-minded people to be able to realise her talent.
