Ten years after Irom Chaoren Singh (40) raped and murdered his pregnant girlfriend, a district court in Manipur sentenced him to death on Wednesday.

Calling the case as ‘rarest of the rare’, the court ruled, “Such cruelty and inhuman act deserve to be wiped out and there is no mitigating factor to deter in other alternative punishment.”

Singh, a resident of Thoubal district, was convicted under IPC Sections 376 (rape), 302 (murder) and 316 (causing the death of an unborn child).

Special judge Justice A Noutuneshwari Devi announcing the verdict also slapped a fine of Rs 50,000 on the convict. “Irom Chaoren Singh is sentenced to death with a fine of Rs 50,000 only and the convict shall be hanged to death,” the order stated.

Further, the court recommended compensation of Rs 10 lakh to the victim’s brother.

According to reports, in June 2010, Singh had allegedly raped and murdered his pregnant girlfriend. Her body was dumped in a river in Imphal as he didn’t want to marry the girl or have the child.
