Manipur by-poll: BJP's O Lukhoi wins Wangoi AC by a slim margin
Imphal: Oinam Lukhoi Singh of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) was declared the winner of the Wangoi assembly constituency by-polls on Tuesday by securing 10,960 votes. Lukhoi won by a margin of 257 votes against Khuiraijam Loken Singh of the National People’s Party (NPP) after a neck-to-neck fight.
Salam Joy Singh of the Indian National Congress (INC) stood third by securing 5,591 votes while 96 voted for NOTA.
On November 7, Manipur went on voting at the four assembly constituencies with 11 candidates fraying in the by-polls to fill the casual vacant seats at the Manipur Legislative Assembly.
However, all eyes were on Wangoi AC in Imphal West district as all the three national parties: the BJP, INC and NPP had fielded their candidates.
The newly-elected Wangoi MLA Lukhoi received the Certificate of Election from Wangoi SDO Bhungba Maibam Khuman at the Imphal West deputy commissioner’s office in the presence of party workers and family.
Speaking to media persons, Lukhoi, who also holds the agriculture portfolio of agriculture, said that he would consult the further course of work with the chief minister N Biren Singh.
“Even though I was inducted as a minister, till now, I could not concentrate on my duty as a minister. But with this win, I will fully dedicate towards the duty and focus on the priority based on the welfare of the people,” said Lukhoi.
It may be noted that Lukhoi is amongst the five Congress MLAs who resigned from the Opposition party and joined BJP during a function at the party office in Delhi.
Moreover, ahead of the by-polls in the state, Lukhoi and Okram Henry Singh, another former Congressman who joined the BJP, were inducted in the council of ministers in the N Biren Singh-led coalition government.
Meanwhile, counting underway at the remaining three ACs with BJP leading in Saitu and Wangjing Tentha ACs, whereas for Lilong, BJP backed Independent candidate Abdul Nasir is reportedly trailing behind Y Antas Khan, another Independent candidate.
