Manipur: Curfew imposed in areas near National Sports University site

Kangpokpi DC issues order under CrPC 144 restricting movement of person in and around university site at Haraothel

Imphal: Following fresh violence erupted in various parts of Imphal West district on Thursday, curfew has been imposed in and around the under-construction site of National Sports University (NSU) at Haraothel in Manipur.

To control the prevailing tense situation, Kangpokpi district magistrate Somorjit Salam issued prohibitory order under CrPC 144 restricting the movement of any person in an and around the varsity site at Haraothel (L Tangnaum) village.

The agreement signed between the Manipur state representatives and leaders of Kuki Students’ Organisation (KSO) Sadar Hills and Kuki Inpi Manipur regarding the land dispute of National Sports University has led to widespread protest, especially at Lamshang and Sekmai Assembly constituencies in Imphal West protested against the very negotiation.

The protestors in Imphal West denounced the decision and termed the agreement as resolved the issue of one party at the cost of another community’s interest of existence.

During the meeting held on October 7, the parties agreed to recommend for renaming the NSU into ‘NSU Haraothel’ since the land was donated by the chief of Haraothel under Kangpopi district.

In a process to control the mob, a scuffle broke out between the police and agitators, in which police resorted to firing tear gas shells and mock bombs and on the other hand protestors started pelted stones at the police personnel, said the report.

In another report, amid the bandh called along the areas, motorists and passengers are facing difficulties crossing their way and stranded at Sekmai bazaar on Friday evening.
