Manipur: Row over National Sports Univ site continues; shutdown hits normalcy
Imphal: Intensive protests by locals continue in Manipur’s Kangpokpi district over the disputed land for construction of the National Sports University at Haraothel village.
As per reports, the area falls on the border of Kangpokpi and Imphal West districts and is disputed due to land demarcation.
A meeting which was held on Tuesday between the chief minister N Biren Singh and leaders of various civil societies under the Kuki Students’ Organisation general headquarters remained inconclusive, as per reports.
However, to arrive at a mutual agreement on the standstill issue, another meeting has been scheduled on Wednesday with CM Biren Singh along with both deputy commissioners of Kangpokpi and Imphal West districts, it said.
On Monday, several people, mostly women, were injured during the protest when police allegedly fired of tear gas shells to control the mob, causing severe tension in the area.
Vehicular movement along the national highway 2 and 37 remained affected since the Kuki civil organisations imposed total shutdown along the highways from October 5 afternoon till midnight of October 10.
It may be mentioned that despite the public in Kangpokpi district demanded the government to declare the current demarcation as null and void, the authorities had gone ahead with the land demarcation for the sports university, it said.
The locals has also demanded to constitute a legitimate demarcation committee and publicize the findings of the state government's District Boundary Commission first before conducting the demarcation,
Now, several Kuki organisations as well as the locals of Haraothel village in Kangpokpi staged a protest and demanded the shifting of the site of the sports university, the first such university in the country.
