Manipur: Lone woman minister Nemcha Kipgen's removal from cabinet slammed

All Manipur Nupi Marup condemns CM N Biren Singh for removing social welfare minister Nemcha Kipgen from BJP-led coalition govt in state

Imphal: The major cabinet reshuffle in Manipur on Thursday has not gone down well as many organisations in the state have raised questions on and condemned the move, especially that of dropping lone woman minister Nemcha Kipgen from the council of ministers. The bodies also demanded re-instating her in the ministerial berth.

In a statement, the All Manipur Nupi Marup has decried and condemned chief minister N Biren Singh for removing social welfare minister Kipgen from the BJP-led coalition government in Manipur.

At a time when various political parties are raising their voice for increasing women lawmakers in a bid to reduce various crimes and atrocities against women, such move from the state government was unexpected and a show of disrespect on women empowerment, said All Manipur Nupi Marup secretary L Sumatibala in a statement.

Despite the Prime Minister Narendra Modi claiming that his government is making effort to empower woman, his government is yet to enact any law to implement the protracted demand for 33 per cent woman reservation of seats in Parliament and state Assemblies, added Sumatibala.

Similarly, the Thadou Inpi, general headquarters (TIGH), the apex body of the Thadou community in the state, has raised serious concern over the removal of the lone woman elected BJP MLA of Kangpokpi Assembly Constituency from the cabinet.

Dropping Kipgen is unexpected and defeats women empowerment which leaves the people of her constituency in particular and the women community of Manipur in general flabbergasted, TIGH said in a statement.

It further said that it is the responsibility of the government to rectify and re-instate the lone woman MLA who has brought lots of development to the district in particular and the state as a whole.

After long wild speculation and much talked on social media, CM N Biren Singh dropped three BJP ministers, including Nemcha Kipgen, two NPP and lone LJP on Thursday and introduced five new faces in his council of ministers.

As per sources, inducting of two former Congress MLAs, including Congress Legislature Party (CLP) leader Okram Ibobi Singh’s nephew O Henry Singh, in the cabinet has not delighted and raised eye-brows among the BJP workers.
