Konsam Romesh Singh won the Manipur’s 'Merit Award to Outstanding Crafts-Person' for 2019-2020
Imphal: A 26-year-old Konsam Romesh Singh from Awang Jiri Maming Leikai in Imphal West district has designed and crafted a unique mobile phone tripod using the humble bamboo. He has even posted an entire tutorial video on his youtube channel Romesh Craft.
Konsam is an innovator and wants to create crafts with bamboo which are relevant today. It all started as a hobby in 2018, which has now turned into a promising career.
Speaking with EastMojo, Romesh informed that he utilised the pandemic lockdown to design and create innovative products.
“I was trying to purchase a mobile phone tripod online since I needed it for taking videos for work. But due to continuous lockdown, I couldn’t place an order online, and there were no delivery services as well. So, I made my own,” said Romesh. His Youtube channel Romesh Craft has the entire tutorial and others if you want to make your own. There are other tutorials as well to make pens, chairs etc.
His innovative and sustainable mobile tripod weighs around 300 gram, and its length is expandable up to 4.5 feet.
A few days after he uploaded the newest product on his Facebook page Romesh Crafts Idea, the young artisan received over ten orders.
It takes around one week to complete the product, and each tripod costs Rs 800, informs Romesh. Romesh believes that doing craftwork is sustainable and also promotes natural resources available in the state.
Born to a farming family, he is youngest among his four siblings.
Recognising his artistic skills and contribution in the field of handicrafts, Romesh was recently awarded Manipur’s Merit Award to Outstanding Crafts-Person for 2019-2020 which came with a Rs 50,000 cash award. The award was given on the sixth National Handloom Day celebration on August 7 in Imphal.
