Manipur: 3 NE militant groups ‘claim’ responsibility for attack on Assam Rifles

The 3 martyred jawans have been identified as Havildar Pranay Kalita from Assam, Rifleman Ratan Salam from Manipur and Rifleman Methna Konyak from Nagaland of 4th Assam Rifles

Imphal: Three banned militant groups of the Northeast — United Liberation Front of Assam-Independent (ULFA-I), Revolutionary People’s Front (RPF) and Manipur Naga People’s Front (MNPF) — have reportedly claimed responsibility over the attack on Assam Rifles personnel at Chandel district near Myanmar border of the state that took place on Wednesday.

Meanwhile, state chief minister N Biren Singh has strongly condemned the attack on security forces.

Taking to his official Twitter handle, CM Biren Singh said, “I strongly condemn the cowardly attack on 4 Assam Rifles in Chandel district. My heartfelt tribute to the 3 security personnel martyred in the attack.”

“These bravehearts have sacrificed their lives to bring peace and harmony in this region. I share the grief of the bereaved families,” he added.

Nagaland ambush: Self-styled major general of NSCN(K) held

At least three Assam Rifles personnel were reportedly martyred and five others injured in an ambush by suspected militants in Manipur’s Chandel district on Wednesday evening.

According to sources in Assam Rifles, the incident took place at about 6:30 pm when the foot patrolling team of 4th Assam Rifles first came under an IED attack, followed by rampant firing from militants taking shelter in the thick jungle at Khongtal village under Chakpikarong police station.

The site of ambush is around 2-km from the Assam Rifles base, sources said.

The three martyred jawans have been identified as Havildar Pranay Kalita from Assam, Rifleman Ratan Salam from Manipur and Rifleman Methna Konyak from Nagaland of 4th Assam Rifles.

The five security personnel, who got injuries on legs, hands and shoulders, are currently undergoing treatment at the military hospital.

However, an official statement from Assam Rifles is still awaited.
